Nelson and Kaslo enjoy revitalized main streets with locally owned shops, many selling locally made items. Heritage buildings and careful restorations help maintain the local, historical feel, and are a destination in themselves. Nelson's Customer Appreciation Day is the last weekend in November, with an emphasis on the Saturday. Come for a week or weekend, it's a girls dream - food, beer, wine, galleries, cultural events, coffee, sweets, and shopping!
And if you do need the convenience of a mall or a larger store such as Walmart, the Chahko Mika Mall in Nelson will meet all those needs—home to perhaps the only waterfront Walmart in the world.
Regular summer markets also run in Crawford Bay, Kaslo, Nelson and Meadow Creek. Autumn is a beautiful time to visit and get great deals on summer and winter apparel and gear.
Along the highway 3A, Balfour to Nelson, a community of artisans live and work. Kaslo and North Kootenay Lake has there own unique artisan flare with small shops certain to hold a treasure or two to take home. Renowned artisans in Crawford Bay will busy you for hours with hand woven shawls, jewellery, and the famous Harry Potter brooms.
