Gyro Park Road, Nelson, BC

Artist: John Mckinnon (Nelson, BC) Year: 1983.

This sculpture creates a scene depicting what one might see on a summer day in this area. Being a single parent with two children at the time, and with so many others in the same position, it seemed an ideal subject to explore. Within this sculpture, the symbolism again plays a significant role. The emotional closeness represented by the interconnected elements of the composition, the oversized hands and feet portray stability and strength, and from one perspective, this piece has an androgynous quality. Of equal stature to the symbolic aspects of any of my sculptures is the overall composition. The harmonious combination of mass, space and line are what bring into the work a sense of vitality.
