Valentine’s Day, Kootenay-Style

With Valentine’s Day landing on a Saturday and rolling straight into the BC Family Day long weekend, there’s no need to squeeze romance into a single night. It’s the perfect excuse to head to the Nelson Kootenay Lake region and lean into experiences that only winter in the Kootenays can offer.

This is Valentine’s Day, Kootenay-style: a little wild, very cozy and best enjoyed without a strict plan.

1. Start Outside (Because That’s Just How We Do It)

Forget the flowers! Here, romance usually starts outdoors. Whether you’re chasing adrenaline or ease, or both, there is no shortage of outdoor activities: A snowy lakeside walk along Kootenay Lake as morning light hits the mountains. A mellow snowshoe or winter hike through quiet forest trails. Or kick it up a notch with a few powder laps at Whitewater Mountain Resort. Also, we were kidding about skipping the flowers. Flowers are always a good idea. For something truly special, seek out Bella Flora, tucked away on Herridge Lane and very much a hidden gem. Or stop by Wildroot on Baker Street, where you can pick up beautiful blooms and a great coffee in one easy stop.

2. Time to Get Cozy

Once the chill sets in, it’s time to lean fully into warmth. Stirling Suites and Savoy Hotel both offer on-site saunas. Book a private sauna at Aura Spa & Salon. Or keep it casual with a sauna session at the Nelson & District Community Complex. For something slower, grab a seat at the Shoebox Theatre for a cozy movie date.

3. Make Dinner a Destination (Not Just a Reservation)

Valentine’s weekend in Nelson is when local kitchens truly show off. Many restaurants offer special set menus, curated pairings and multi-course dinners. Keep an eye out for Valentine’s menus at spots like Rel-ish, Yum Son, Louie’s Steakhouse, Sage Tapas & Grill, and more! Tip: Saturday plus a long weekend fills fast. Book early.

 4. Gifts That Make Sense Here

In the Kootenays, the best gifts aren’t always things, they’re shared moments: Local chocolate, ceramics or art. A class, treatment or experience you can do together. Adding an extra night to your stay just because.

With a Saturday celebration and a built-in long weekend, the best move isn’t doing more, it’s doing things slower. Sleep in. Stay out late. Extend the trip!
