Favourite fall activities in Nelson BC and Kootenay Lake

Every year, Nelson and the entire Kootenay Lake area says goodbye to summer and hello to the colder weather in a spectacular fashion. The area lights up with colour as trees turn magnificent reds, golds, oranges and yellows. And you'll start to notice a change in the locals too... That's right, it's sweater weather! Dig into your closet and bring out your earth-toned flannel, your Blundstone boots, your favourite touque, and of course your softest sweater!

Now that sweater weather is upon us, here are a few of our favourite fall activities.

Gearing Up for Winter

Nelson and Kaslo offer some of the friendliest and best equipped outdoor gear stores you’ll find anywhere, take a stroll and get yourself stoked up for the season ahead. Read more about Gearing Up for Winter in Nelson, and in Kaslo at Kaslo Kayaking.

Take a Hike

Fall is a great time to take a hike in the Kootenay Lake area. The days are cooler, the leaves are starting to turn, and the Larch are bright yellow in the Alpine.

Swing into Autumn

Snow may be dusting the mountaintops while visions of powder days dance in your head. But there's still plenty of golf to be had in the Kootenay Lake region, especially as the landscape turns into a blaze of colours with the arrival of autumn.

Eat & Drink

Yes, weather can be unpredictable this time of year - but you can trust the food and drink in our region is always top-notch!  From organic coffee roasted right here in the Kootenays to craft breweries to fusion plates and fine dining, you can find it in one of the more than 70 restaurants in the region.

Soak at Ainsworth Hot Springs

Just 15 minutes from Kaslo or Balfour, and 40 minutes from Nelson, a visit to the world-famous Ainsworth Hot Springs is a quintessential part of any trip to our region. This year due to COVID-19 the pools at Ainsworth Hot Springs Resort are open to hotel guests only.
