Top Rainy Day Things to Do Around Kootenay Lake

Top Rainy Day Things to Do Around Kootenay Lake

The Kootenay Lake region is usually sunshine and rainbows. But when the odd shower rolls in, here are some top suggestions to help you make the most of your time, rain or shine.

Kootenay Lake Road Trip App - Self Guided Audio Tours

Provided you're not in a convertible, the Kootenay Lake Road Trip App Driving Tour is a great way to see the area despite bad weather. With live audio guidance on nearly 100 points of interest from Nelson to Meadow Creek and Riondel to Wynndel, and everywhere in between; this immersive driving tour is a phenomenal outing rain or shine. Download now!

There is also a Mural Tour on the App, in both English and French. It takes you around the quirky alleys and side streets of Nelson, BC giving you opportunities to learn, listen and explore unique businesses you may not have known existed.

Ainsworth Hot Springs

If it’s raining, embrace it with a fully body soak at Ainsworth’s soothing hot springs. Raindrops can dance on your head all day long while relaxing in the outdoor pool. Or head into the caves (that you can wade in!) for shelter and some serious hot relaxation. And for the daring, jump into the cold pool to get really refreshed. After you're done soaking, check out the JB Fletcher Store for some local artisanal wares and a trip back in time; it's a museum and local store rolled into one.

Cody Caves

Head underground with Cody Cave Tours into the labyrinth like network of caves near Ainsworth Hot Springs. Learn about stalactites and stalagmites from a local guide as you spelunk your way through the maze.

Dining

Patios are great, but the interiors of our restaurants are also bursting with character. Admire the heritage charm of the Hume Hotel’s Library Lounge, or the rustic architecture of the Kaslo Hotel that takes you right back to the days when Kaslo was a logging epicentre. The list goes on!

Shopping

What's a road trip with out a little shopping. The artists in our region are creating one of a kind products from pottery to paintings. The artisans are all over, and to make it easy here is a list, locally made

On the East Shore of Kootenay Lake are the renowned artisans of Crawford Bay offering a unique shopping experience all bundled together, with quaint cafes in-between.

A new and truly innovative enterprise, in both English and French, brings local practices rooted in traditional know-how to the visitors experience through our local "Artisans at Work" - Economusee. A must do experience. Chances are extremely high you won't depart your vacation without some of these local products.

Wander Nelson’s historic Baker Street or Kaslo’s quaint Main Street. Boutique shops offer everything from locally made cartography to ethically sourced clothing. Charming bookstores and outdoor gear shops offer a curated selection to help you enjoy your time relaxing or adventuring in the Koots.

Lakefront Walks

Nelson’s Rotary Lakeside Park is a gem. Flat pathways wind their way along the water, with art installations complementing the natural scenery. And if rain clouds beckon, hop on historic Streetcar #23 for a trip back in time and through the Park. Ding ding!

The Kaslo beachfront is another great option. Nearly end-to-end views along Kootenay Lake, and if you're lucky you might catch a glimpse of Mount Loki hiding across the way!

Kootenay Bay is magical any time of year, but on a rainy day, waiting for a ferry or exploring the sights and sounds, the waterfront is a peaceful destination. Pilot Bay hike is a good place to walk too with it's heavy coverage of trees, and of course stunning views.

Theatres

Rediscover the joys of cinema at Nelson’s lovingly restored (and volunteer run) Civic Theatre, complete with one big screen, rockin' sound system and spacious seating. The Capitol Theatre also boasts a charming heritage experience with top-notch performances through the year. If you're a little further north, the Langham Theatre in Kaslo is a lovely small-town theatre dripping in heritage.

SS Moyie

Nestled up on shore, Kaslo’s historic SS Moyie sternwheeler offers plenty to discover rain or shine. Explore the multiple levels, rooms and exhibitions that fondly recall the bygone days of passenger travel on Kootenay Lake.

Fishing

Does rain attract fish? We’re not sure but there’s only one way to find out. Head out on the water with a local guide in search of Kootenay Lake’s prized Rainbow Trout.

Museums & Galleries

Nelson’s iconic museum of art and history anchors the intersection of Vernon St and Ward St. Check out the rotating exhibition on the first floor, learn about local history upstairs, and browse the fully stocked gift shop for a unique souvenir. In Kaslo, the Langham Cultural Centre offers incredible exhibits on the history of the region, including one on the Japanese interment camp that was operating in Kaslo during the second World War. Also in Kaslo is the Kootenay Star Mining Museum, a quaint mini-museum dedicated to the rich heritage of mining and forestry in the area.

There's also a ton of small, locally-owned galleries spread around the entirety of Kootenay Lake. You can find out more about them here.

Live Music

Check out a local festival and dance in the rain or sunshine. The Kaslo Jazz Etc. Festival features a floating stage, while the Nelson International Mural Festival adds even more colour and character to the Queen City. Live bands, DJs, and street performers provide plenty of musical shows all year long.
