Skateboard in the Kootenays: Nelson and Kaslo have Awesome Skateparks
After twelve years of hard work, dedication and many volunteer hours, Nelson has one of the finest skateparks in BC. Along with neighbouring Kaslo, plus the indoor skatepark at the Nelson and District Youth Centre, the Nelson and Kootenay Lake region has lots of opportunities to skate to your heart’s content.
Skateboarding in the Kootenays, especially the Nelson and Kootenay Lake area, is a community affair. The skateparks are full of talented pro and amateur skaters, but you’ll also find that typically mellow Kootenay vibe at the skateparks here. Young kids skate alongside more accomplished skaters. The parks are very family friendly, but also well maintained and populated by some serious talent, for example local rider gone pro, Drew Summersides. The Kootenay Lake Outdoor Skatepark Society, in Nelson, has an active facebook page, posting the latest news. Kaslo’s skatepark has a similar feel to it, but also has the added feature of being right on the waterfront. Gorgeous.
