Breathe, Take It All In - Food & Drink

Fresh flavours are abundant in the Kootenay Lake region. From craft breweries to character cafes, artisan bakeries to independent restaurants, and outdoor markets to indoor eateries, true local flavour is the name of the game.

This appreciation for good food runs deep. Supporting local producers is a cornerstone of the Kootenay Co-Op grocery store, an ethos held by dozens of locally owned restaurants in the region. This prestigious Co-Op is profiled in the book, "Grocery Store", written by local author Jon Steinman, who took his message on tour across North America.

Visiting one of the many farmers markets offers the chance to meet the makers and taste their harvest. A long growing season and demand for locally grown produce means that you’ll find a bounty of fresh ingredients on your plate or in your picnic basket, including various fruits, veggies, and baked goods.

The wide range of culinary cultures in Nelson owes some of its origin to the open-minded and worldly people that inhabit and visit the area. Trained chefs from the local Selkirk College and abroad are also bringing new ideas and global tastes to the food scene, creating delicious dishes that are a feast for the senses. The result is a fusion of flavours, ranging from Mexican to South Indian, Canadian Bistro to BBQ, Middle Eastern to Tapas, and Italian to Irish. A passion for healthy food and independent character is reflected in the large number of artisan sourdough bakeries in Nelson, Kaslo, Crawford Bay, and Balfour.

Craft breweries and cafes are booming in the region, and reflect the local’s desire to support independent and flavourful producers. Tasting rooms invite beer enthusiasts to discover seasonal and limited release creations, while charming cafes serve up locally roasted coffee creations on sunny patios and inviting indoor spaces. Nature and local heritage are often celebrated and embedded within eateries, providing guests with a unique experience that goes beyond food and drink.
