Sports + Recreation
Nelson is very proud to have hosted a variety of sport events such as Hockey Day in Canada (Nelson), various Provincial youth tournaments and adult recreational tournaments. Most recently, it was one of the West Kootenay Tri-Cities of the BC Senior Games, an event that attracted about 5,000 participants, families and friends to Nelson and our nearby communities.
Existing facilities are well utilized and are regularly upgraded. New facilities have been built over the past five to ten years. The Nelson and District Community Complex and Lakeside Park are great for swimming, diving, and exercise. Nelson boasts one of the oldest and most cared for Ice arenas in the province that remains in full use today – so much so that it offers a Sport Culture Museum as part of its charm. There are hockey and curling rinks in Nelson and Kaslo, great bike parks and skate parks too, including the Lakefront Skate Park in Kaslo and a year-round indoor venue at the Nelson and District Youth Centre. Our sport facilities cater to Field, Ice, Gym, Alpine, Cycling, Aquatic, Lake and rapid water activities for training, tournaments or meets and are supported by a strong community volunteer base.
Nelson is also home to a variety of yoga studios and retreats offered in a selection of styles.
